What Are You Passionate About?

“Daddy, what kind of work would you really, *really* want to do?” “The same thing I’m doing now, but I’d own the buildings.” She leans in, hugs me, and says, “That’s nice. I’d work at 7 Brew.” I hope I can learn to love my work the same way my 9-year old loves frosted beverages.…

What are you passionate about?

Have you ever struggled with something you don’t understand? Even when you really really wanted it to work out for you?

I struggled understanding family and work from my parents. As the only child of two government employees, I had a limited view of what’s possible.

That struggle ignited a passion to learn new ways of doing things. Because I could see the world they were forming me for was going away.

That left me with two options: I could either cling to the reality I grew up with and continue to worry about losing things.

Or I could get to the core principles and understand how it all fit together to make my life better.

Making the choice

I realized I needed some new “how’s.” And in finding them, I became the “how”.

Questions like: “How am I going to make money doing something different from my parents and still raise a big family?”

That took me to look inside. First things in growing myself through building a relationship, having children, giving birth, and raising a family. Everything else about “how” started revealing itself around that.

But “how” isn’t just one thing. It’s a continuum of things related that are working toward your greatest good.

Picking from the buffet

It flies in the face of all the gurus’ who advocate focusing on one thing at a time. Because humans are complex animals. Living with so many of them takes complex tools.

Is it ok to be passionate about a lot of tools that make one goal possible? Of course!

But to not learn how to use those tools keeps you stuck and powerless.

“My people perish for lack of knowledge.”

-Hosea 4:6

Everything is knowable. But it pains me to watch people struggle with them as though they’re merely ephemeral. Growing in concepts you want to master in life comes from understanding the next step.

Sometimes that takes tools. Other times it takes the grace to step back and let God handle it. Because you can’t handle everything all at once, you need to learn when to step back and trust that things will work themselves out while being committed to seeing it through.

But implementing the tools is the hard part. One you can overcome with momentum from daily consistency. The 1-2% you have control over can make a big difference in your life once you realize it.

It’s easier to wrestle with 1-2% than the universe all at once.

Be honest with yourself

Staying stuck doesn’t require much. Just stay where you are.

But when staying becomes more painful than making the change, it provides motivation to learn and use new tools.

Be observant

Once you found your pain points, what will have the biggest impact if you improved it?

The problems are different for everyone. So is the way out of them.

If you’re honest with yourself about who you are, it makes it easier to understand “how” to improve your situation.

Be consistent

Knowing a problem is there and being honest with yourself about it isn’t the end. That problem will show up for you every day.

You have to show up just as much.

Your job is to take your observations and understand when the right time and place is for you to take action with the tools you’ve learned.

Trends will always move around you whether or not you do anything about them. Learn more about the parts you have control over until you’re stable enough to surf those waves.

God give me the courage to change what I can, the patience for what I cannot, and the wisdom to know the difference.
