What’s a skill you consider basic, that most people don’t actually know how to do?
Affordability.
It’s at the forefront of everyone’s mind right now.
“Can I make the next house payment?”
“Can I put food on the table?”
“Should a burrito really cost $20?”
And the gurus’ answer?
More discipline.
Well, yes. But to a point.
Discipline doesn’t work on its own
Anyone can make life more miserable on themselves.
That doesn’t make it sustainable. Especially when most people are oriented to escape pain.
You can’t cut your way to growth, either.
Cutting can make more money available, which is a valuable tool for making your income work.
But there’s only so much you can cut before life is truly miserable and you’re living to work instead of enjoying life.

And when you only know how to cut without enjoying anything, what awaits you when you reach the goal you saved for?
Right. More misery and not knowing how to enjoy yourself or the people around you.
Not the only way
Cheer up, though. Cutting doesn’t work as well or as long as growing your income.
That path takes work. And the discipline of not spending everything on the back end so that you actually make progress when you advance.
So how do you tell the difference between which path is right for the time you’re facing in life right now?
To know that you need financial engineering.
You want me to what?
I know. It sounds complicated and scary.
Complicated and scary enough that a few generations of Americans have handed this over to financial managers to take care of for them.
But trust me when I say all you need to understand is your money in must be greater than your money out.
Super simple.
And all the tools you need to keep track of this are either free or low cost.
Super accommodating.
And when you know where everything sits, you can make better decisions about where money goes.
Why?
It’s great to have a goal in mind. But not doing this is like getting on a road trip without a map. You don’t know how hard the road will be and you have no idea how long it will take to get there.
Super effective.
How do I know?
Because I was there for several years and finally got my head above water with these tools.
