What’s the last movie that made you cry?
The pressure was immense.
The king ordered his subjects to bow to his statue when the music played.
Three men stood, stone-faced, and told the king what he didn’t want to hear.
“No.”
Watching their faith tested in action was enough to bring a tear to my eye.
That was the power Daniel and the Fiery Furnace had over me.
You are what you consume
And those are the kind of reminders we need. When a situation is beyond your control, the best way through is to give up control.
It happens so many times in this movie. That it resolves the same way every time is a powerful reminder.
It didn’t matter if the Babylonian army was breaking through the gates, laying waste to the city…
It didn’t matter if King Nebuchadnezzar ordered his wise men executed when none of them could tell what he dreamed…
It didn’t matter if they were thrown into a fiery furnace for refusing to bow to an idol.
Each time, these men surrendered themselves in prayer for God to carry them through.
And seeing that cuts to my heart.
Your output tells more
Because there are plenty of times I’ve faced tough situations.
Not quite life or death as these men did. But my nervous system couldn’t tell the difference.
Nor could it see the way out was surrender. And so the easy way out became normal for me.
That only provides for so long. Because someone else has to pay the price for my choice. Or I missed an opportunity to do something greater because I didn’t rise to the occasion or relied only on my limited ability to accomplish the task.
More important than the embarrassment of not being able to do what I needed was not reaching out to others when I needed the help. That created a false sense of pride in my expertise.
But the level of surrender I saw on the screen is what I need to see in action more often. And more often from myself.
Self-reinforcement
Even when that happens, when I can put myself away and surrender, it still cuts me to the heart how beautiful those graces are.
What made me cry during the movie wasn’t just the pain of highlighting my shortcomings.
It was the awe of just how much I’m loved.
That there are thousands of years of examples of that love. And billions of years of preparation for me to receive it.
